The loss of a loved one is a stressful time for all whānau.

Losing a loved one while COVID-19 is present in Aotearoa will bring additional stress.

Here's some helpful information about tangihanga for whānau, hapū and iwi, no matter where you live.

Auckland and parts of Waikato are at  Alert Level 3
The rest of Aotearoa is at Alert Level 2

The Ministry of Health has implemented strict restrictions on tangihanga in Alert Level 3 and has slightly changed Alert Level 2 tangihanga requirements due to the increased concern with the Delta variant.

During the previous outbreak of COVID-19 in Aotearoa in March 2020, Te Rōpū Whakakaupapa Urutā advocated for tangihanga restrictions to be adjusted to enable whānau Māori to hold tangihanga within strong guidelines and support from funeral directors.

As the Delta variant is a significantly more contagious and transmissible disease, Te Rōpū Whakakaupapa Urutā accepts the Ministry of Health's current restrictions.
